At 'I read with my hands' tactile books we produce tactile fabric books for young blind children from 12 months to 7 years of age.
Tactile books are very important because they help to sensitise the young blind child's fingertips in preparation for Braille reading in Grade 1.
Tactile pictures help the story to come alive and they also encourage social interaction as they need to be read with an adult. These books also
help to convert 3D objects into a 2D form on fabric. This is essential for the blind child in preparation for raised map and graph reading later
on at school.
Our books include beginner fabric books for very young readers with simple tactile pictures and text, as well as more advanced tactile books with slightly more complicated tactile pictures and text for beginner Braille readers. All books include large bold print for low vision readers and Grade 1 Braille for beginner Braille readers. Most books contain activities which stimulate the other senses too. All of the tactile books are suitable for sighted children with neurological disorders as these children usually benefit from learning and exploring their world by touch.
